Six Ways to Extend Drive Shaft Service Life

Drive shafts in continuous industrial service are expensive to replace and expensive to stop for. These practices measurably extend service life.

1. Keep joints in phase

Yoke alignment must be correct or vibration and wear accelerate dramatically.

2. Lubricate on schedule

Universal joints need fresh grease at defined intervals — not when they start to rumble.

3. Control the operating angle

Keep joint angles within the design limit and equal at each end of a double-joint arrangement.

4. Check for corrosion early

Seals and coatings fail first in wet or chemical environments; catch it before the bearing does.

5. Balance high-speed shafts

Above a few hundred rpm, specify G6.3 or better balancing to avoid destructive vibration.

6. Inspect on a schedule

A short periodic inspection finds worn trunnions and loose flange bolts before they become a breakdown.
