A cardan shaft (universal joint shaft) transmits torque between two shafts that are not perfectly in line. Choosing the right one comes down to four numbers: torque, length, operating angle and duty cycle.

1. Torque capacity

Size the shaft for the peak torque of the drive, not the average. Apply a service factor of 1.5–2.0 for shock-loaded applications such as crushers and rolling mills.

2. Length and slip

Fixed-length shafts suit fixed drives. Where thermal growth or suspension travel changes the distance, specify a slip-type telescopic shaft with adequate spline engagement.

3. Operating angle

A single joint introduces velocity fluctuation as the angle increases. Keep the angle low, or use a double-joint arrangement, and phase the yokes correctly.

4. Duty cycle and environment

Continuous heavy duty calls for forged alloy steel, hardened trunnions and sealed needle bearings. Corrosive environments call for stainless or protective coatings.
